Before Gen Con handed out musketeers and before The First Chapter hit local game stores, there was a booth in Anaheim and a free Mickey that quietly rewrote the calendar.

September 9–11, 2022. D23 Expo. Anaheim Convention Center. Lorcana had barely finished introducing itself, and already collectors were forming a line for something that looked almost humble: a non-foil promotional card, handed out at the booth with a pin, limited quantities each day, no sealed chase, no holographic fireworks. Just Mickey Mouse — Brave Little Tailor — wearing two stamps that would matter more than any foil treatment for years to come.

Collector number 1/P1. A D23 Expo mark. A “1st” edition seal.

Call it what it is: the first Disney Lorcana card made available free to the public — and, in practical terms, specimen zero of the hobby’s paper trail. Number one in Promo Set 1. Disney’s most famous character. A Dreamborn Hero in Ruby ink who costs a frankly theatrical 8 to play and quests for a greedy 4 lore while Evasive keeps lesser challengers from picking a fight. The flavor text even leans into the needlework: “When defeat looms and victory hangs by a thread, a hero bolts to the rescue, patching things up through shear determination.” (Yes. Shear. The pun arrived early. The culture never recovered.)

If Gen Con 2023 is ignition, D23 2022 is the laboratory notebook — the day the ink left the announcement and landed in someone’s hands.

How it got into collections

Distribution was beautifully, almost aggressively simple:

• Free at the Disney Lorcana booth during D23 Expo 2022
• Bundled with a commemorative pin featuring the Mickey illustration and Lorcana logo
• Limited supply each day (when it was gone, it was gone)

No purchase required for this card. That distinction matters, because the same weekend offered a separate product: the D23 Expo Collector’s Set ($49.99) — a portfolio of six foiled companions, also bearing D23 Expo and “1st” stamps. Mickey Brave Little Tailor was the free public face of the reveal. The Collector’s Set was the paid ensemble. Different acquisition paths. Same weekend. Same fossil bed.

An 8-cost Legendary-pattern face that quests like it has somewhere important to be. Evasive is the scientific justification for the swagger: you don’t challenge this Mickey casually; you challenge him properly, or not at all.

Promo vs. retail twin (diagnostic traits)

The retail twin arrives later in The First Chapter as Legendary 115/204 — same character version, same Kole art family, same core rules text — but without the convention archaeology.

Authentication checklist (loupe optional, honesty required):

• D23 Expo logo
• “1st” edition stamp
• Collector number 1/P1
• Non-foil finish
• Nicholas Kole credit / Brave Little Tailor version
• Flavor text present (shear determination)

Miss the stamps and you may still have a perfectly respectable Legendary. Find the stamps and you have day one — the weekend Lorcana stopped being a press release and started being cardboard you could hold.

A curatorial aside: those “1st” seals are not a casual flourish. Early plans reportedly considered a broader first-edition treatment for The First Chapter; that path was not taken for the retail set. The D23 Expo cards (Mickey included) remain among the clearest public carriers of that “1st” mark — which is why serious collectors treat the stamp like a diagnostic trait, not décor.

“Mockey” vs Mickey (a note on the threads)

In collector circles you will sometimes hear “Mockey” — a pejorative nickname that roughly means mock Mickey: a cardboard mouse wearing the wrong costume for the case object. The term itself is community slang, not an official Ravensburger category, and it is not (yet) pinned to one neatly archived public thread. Useful anyway. The debate it names is real.

Because Expo Mickey was free, famous, numbered 1/P1, and later traded like a small museum piece, the secondary market grew two overlapping hazards:

1. Wrong printing sold as Expo — retail The First Chapter Legendary 115/204, later D23 Collection / extended-art reissues, or other Mickey Brave Little Tailor faces mislabeled as the 2022 Expo freebie.
2. Outright counterfeits / proxies — especially once prices spiked (ungraded copies were already reported in the high hundreds on eBay within weeks of the show).

A preservationist’s first question is therefore not “is Mickey cute?” It is: is this the Expo freebie printing? Authenticity and identity are cousins here. You can hold real Cartamundi cardboard that is still the wrong Mickey for this case file.

Taxonomy before vibes

Confusing foil with non-foil is a classic wrong-ID trap: the Expo freebie is non-foil; the same weekend’s Collector’s Set companions were foiled. Different products. Same fossil bed. Different labels on the drawer.

Lab tells collectors actually use

No single tell is gospel — early Lorcana also has genuine QC variance — so stack evidence:

• Identity first: D23 Expo logo, “1st” stamp, 1/P1, non-foil, Kole Brave Little Tailor face, Ruby / 8 / 5-5-4 / Evasive
• Stock & cut: industrial edges preferred; soft, waxy, or oddly flexible stock is a yellow flag
• Print under magnification: clean CMYK rosettes vs blurry/irregular dots; fuzzy logos or off colors
• Back & light: constellation swirl and opacity consistent with known genuine; many fakes look oddly sharp or over-detailed on the back
• Market behavior: far-below-market price + refusal of back/macro photos is a risk signal, not a print diagnosis

Compare against a known Expo copy or a slab when stakes are high. Loupe optional. Honesty required.

Curatorial translation

“Mockey” is the street name. The science is printing taxonomy + physical authentication. One protects you from buying a Legendary in Expo clothing. The other protects you from buying a photocopy of history. Both belong in the case file — because specimen 1/P1 is valuable precisely because so many almost-Mickeys want to be him.

Context: the whisper before the bang
