Gen Con 2023: Mickey Mouse – Musketeer

The launch specimen

It’s tempting to file this under “Mickey with a sword” and call it a day. Resist that urge. The sword is the least interesting thing about the card.

August 2023, Indianapolis, Gen Con. The halls are doing what Gen Con halls do — carpet, caffeine, and the low roar of people who have already decided this weekend matters. At Booth 2001, Ravensburger isn’t teasing Lorcana anymore. The First Chapter is on the floor: product, demos, tournaments. And into the same hands goes a promotional card that doesn’t dazzle with foil so much as it dates itself.

Mickey Mouse – Musketeer. Collector number 11/P1. A Gen Con 2023 logo sitting precisely where a rarity symbol usually lives — like a museum tag someone forgot to hide.

If D23 Expo 2022 was the lab notebook (Brave Little Tailor, 1/P1, D23 mark, “1st” seal — a lovely pre-launch artifact), Gen Con is ignition. Local game stores still two weeks out (August 18). Mass retail later still (September 1). Same mouse. Different moment in the fossil record. This isn’t the whisper before the bang. This is the bang, politely sleeved.

How it got into collections

The distribution protocol was almost suspiciously straightforward:

  1. Buy Disney Lorcana product at the Gen Con booth, or
  2. Play in any Disney Lorcana ticketed event (demo or tournament)

No sealed-pack lottery. No “maybe you’ll pull it.” An attestation card — cardboard proof you brushed against launch weekend via wallet or chair. In collectability terms: provenance wearing a musketeer’s hat. Charming. Extremely hard to fake with vibes alone.

Ink Steel
Cost 6 (inkwell-eligible)
Strength / Willpower / Lore 2 / 7 / 2
Classifications Dreamborn · Hero · Musketeer
Abilities Bodyguard; ALL FOR ONE (your other Musketeers get +1 Strength)

Gameplay face matches the retail Rare from The First Chapter (186/204). Same art. Same keywords. Same 7-willpower bumper whose scientific purpose is, frankly, to get in the way while the rest of the Musketeers enjoy a quiet +1. The classifications aren’t decorative — “Musketeer” is load-bearing rules text wearing a costume.

So what’s different? Everything that isn’t the game. The paradata.

Promo vs. retail twin (diagnostic traits)

Attribute Gen Con 2023 Promo The First Chapter retail
Set code 11/P1 186/204
Rarity position Gen Con 2023 logo Rare symbol
Availability Event / booth purchase, launch weekend Packs after August 18, 2023 (foil & non-foil in set)
Historical role Launch-weekend marker Standard set inclusion

Authentication checklist (loupe optional, honesty required):

  • Gen Con 2023 logo in the rarity slot
  • Collector number 11/P1
  • Non-foil finish
  • Identical rules text and Van Gool art to 186/204

Miss the logo and you’ve got a perfectly respectable Rare. Find the logo and you’ve got a timestamp. Collectors tend to prefer the timestamp.

The missing number

Early Promo Set 1 numbering left a conspicuous gap at 11/P1 — between Organized Play Kit promos and the later Gamescom Goofy – Musketeer. Collectors noticed the hole before the show. Gen Con Mickey was the specimen that filled it. Nature abhors a vacuum; Lorcana collectors abhor an unexplained P1 slot even more.
